DemoYear 3 · “The Underground Kingdom”

Maya crept through the dark tunnel beneath her garden shed. She couldn’t believe what was happening! Then she heard a gentle voice. “Welcome, Maya,” said a creature with silver fur. “Our underground kingdom needs your help.”

Reading Fluency started at Fetcham Village Infant School. It is now used by primary schools across the country to find the children who can decode but cannot yet read with fluency.

2 to 3

minutes to assess a child, start to finish

We’ve found Reading Fluency incredibly useful at Brambleside. It has helped us move beyond a broad sense of reading need and identify, with much greater precision, which pupils need support with fluency, pace and automaticity. The assessments are quick to use, easy to interpret and have given staff clear information to shape targeted intervention. Most importantly, it has helped us spot children who may be able to decode but are not yet reading with the fluency needed to fully access comprehension.

Simon recognised a real problem for schools: the absence of simple, accurate reading fluency assessments. By creating this tool, he has provided a solution that enables schools to identify pupils’ needs precisely and act on them. It’s something every school should have.

Two minutes with a book. Not twenty with a spreadsheet.

You shouldn’t need hours to assess reading fluency

Between lesson planning, marking and actually teaching, when do you have fifteen to twenty minutes per child to assess fluency?

You don’t. That’s why we built this.

Assess in two to three minutes. Track errors, omissions and self-corrections with colour-coded visual reports. Export to Excel or PDF for parents and school leaders. Done.

Knowing where a child is, is only half the work

The assessment tells you where every child is. The harder part is what comes next. So we built the resources to take a child from where the assessment found them to where you want them to be, lesson by lesson.

Syllable stacks

Longer words are where a lot of readers stall. Syllable stacks break a word into its parts and build it back up, one layer at a time, so a child meets the whole word with confidence rather than guessing at it. Short, structured and ready to use, with no preparation needed.

Built for the Birch to Yew stages, across years 1 to 4.

Flash phrases

Fluent readers don’t read word by word. They read in phrases, grouping words into chunks that carry meaning. Flash phrases train exactly that, moving a child from halting, one-word-at-a-time reading towards phrasing that sounds like talking.

The same phrases come in whatever form suits the moment, for a quick small-group session, for the whole class or for a child working on their own. However you teach it, the reading is the same.

Built for years 1 to 4.

Poetry collections

Our richest resource, and the one we’re proudest of. Repeated reading is the most evidence-backed route to fluency there is, and poetry makes the repetition something children actually want to do. Rhythm, rhyme and a reason to read it again. These are original poems, written for the classroom, not pulled from an anthology.

The research backs this up. Timothy Rasinski’s work has long shown that repeated reading improves fluency across rate, accuracy and comprehension.

Full collections for years 2, 3 and 4, the years where fluency is won or lost.

We’ve gone deepest where it matters most first, the fluency years. The approach grows outward from there, with more on the way.

Save hours. Spot struggles. Support readers.

Get your evenings back

Complete fluency assessments in two to three minutes per child, not fifteen to twenty.

  • • Automatic WPM and accuracy calculations
  • • No paper forms to score manually
  • • No data entry or filing
  • • Assessment history saved for every student

Stop losing evenings to paperwork and manual calculations.

See exactly where readers struggle

Colour-coded tracking shows you precisely what’s happening:

  • Errors, words read incorrectly
  • Omissions, words skipped
  • Self-corrections, where they caught their own mistake
  • Additions, words added

No more guessing which children need help, or what kind of help they need.

Make better intervention decisions

Get clear data that helps you take action:

  • • See which children are struggling, and why
  • • Identify patterns: are errors increasing? Self-corrections improving?
  • • Share detailed reports with parents and school leaders
  • • Export data to Excel or PDF for record-keeping

Use evidence, not guesswork, to decide who needs support.
