We’ve found Reading Fluency incredibly useful at Brambleside. It has helped us move beyond a broad sense of reading need and identify, with much greater precision, which pupils need support with fluency, pace and automaticity. The assessments are quick to use, easy to interpret and have given staff clear information to shape targeted intervention. Most importantly, it has helped us spot children who may be able to decode but are not yet reading with the fluency needed to fully access comprehension.

Longer words are where a lot of readers stall. Syllable stacks break a word into its parts and build it back up, one layer at a time, so a child meets the whole word with confidence rather than guessing at it. Short, structured and ready to use, with no preparation needed.

Fluent readers don’t read word by word. They read in phrases, grouping words into chunks that carry meaning. Flash phrases train exactly that, moving a child from halting, one-word-at-a-time reading towards phrasing that sounds like talking.
The same phrases come in whatever form suits the moment, for a quick small-group session, for the whole class or for a child working on their own. However you teach it, the reading is the same.
